This two day Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) training session will provide attendees interested in understanding BECx an exposure to the process, practical experience, and hands-on training. The class will also explore the requirements of LEED V4 Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning as it relates to BECx. The class will be taught by two of the industry’s founding leaders, practicing in the field of BECx.

The class addresses the fundamental aspects of commissioning which is focused on verifying the delivery of a successful building enclosure, in accordance with the owner’s project requirements. The training will provide owners, commissioning providers, designers and contractors the opportunity to understand what should be expected and delivered from the commissioning process, and how it impacts the design and construction of building enclosures.

Day 1 will explore the pre-design and design phases of the process, highlighting an overview of the process, delivery of the pre-design and design phase tasks, and discussion of the basics of building enclosure design. Examples and exercises related to implementation of the BECx process shall be delivered.

Day 2 will explore the application of the BECx process during the construction and occupancy phases. It will highlight the tasks associated with the BECx construction phase, and with achieving a successful building enclosure. The session will focus on the sensible application of BECx through mock-ups, site observations, testing and the relationship with the contractor’s building enclosure coordination and performance program. Case studies and exercises will be provided to illustrate the application of the construction phase BECx tasks, and the extension into the occupancy phase.

In addition to designers, contractors and commissioning professionals, Owners can benefit from attendance at the BECx training to gain an understanding of:

Building enclosure risk management,
The role that BECx can play as it relates to achieving the Owner’s Project Requirements,
The risk of not utilizing BECx versus the cost of its implementation
Lessons learned from projects about BECx from perspectives of both the design team and the construction team.

Learning Objectives

This course is intended to provide or enhance the participant’s ability to:

1. Determine the building enclosure commissioning tasks necessary to manage the risks involved in designing, constructing, using, and maintaining a building enclosure.

2. Understand and implement the tasks associated with the building enclosure commissioning process and how these are procedurally integrated into the project delivery process

3. Describe the tests and appropriate testing schedule for building enclosure systems and assemblies.

4. Describe how the new requirements of LEED v4, ASHRAE Standard 202 and related industry documents impact BECx and address the risks associated with the building enclosure.
